Effect of silicon applied to wheat plants on the biology and probing behaviour of the greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Goussain,Marcio M.; Prado,Ernesto; Moraes,Jair C..
The effect of silicon-treated wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was evaluated. Plants were treated with silicon incorporated to the soil and by foliar spraying. Aphid development was evaluated by observing the duration of the pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, as well as fecundity and longevity. Probing behaviour was investigated by using the DC electrical penetration graphs (EPG) technique and a "honeydew clock". Silica treated plants had a clear adverse effect on aphid development. Stylet penetration was not affected by treatments showing no physical barriers by the plant tissue. However, stylet was withdrawn more often on plants treated with silica,...

Feeding behavior of two exotic aphid species on their original hosts in a new invaded area Neotropical Entomology
Lazzarotto,CM; Lazzari,SMN; Penteado,SRC.
Greenidea ficicola Takahashi and Greenidea psidii van der Goot (Aphididae: Greenideinae) are Asian aphid species newly introduced in Brazil associated with Moraceae and Myrtaceae. The feeding behavior of G. ficicola and G. psidii was investigated on their respective host plants, Ficus benjamina (Moraceae) and Psidium guajava (Myrtaceae), using the Electrical Penetration Graph (EPG). Fifteen females of each aphid species were monitored during 24h using a DC-EPG GIGA-4 monitor. The time spent in phloem phase (waveforms E1 and E2) was 13.6% of the total recording time for G. ficicola and 0.8% for G. psidii. The average time in the pathway phase (waveforms C and pd) represented 50% of the total time for both species. Aphids spent more time in non-penetration...

First report of multiple anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of sheep in Colombia Anais da ABC (AABC)
Gárcia,Carlos M.B.; Sprenger,Lew K.; Ortiz,Efraín B.; Molento,Marcelo B..
This study aimed to report the presence of parasites resistant to the most used anthelmintic drugs in sheep in Colombia. Four farms (denominated farm 1, 2, 3 and 4) were selected where the animals were not treated with anthelmintics for two months before the trial. Animals with faecal egg count (FEC) above 150 and of different ages were allocated into six groups, each consisting of at least 5 animals. The drugs and dosages used were: ivermectin 1% (0.2 mg/kg), albendazole 25% (5 mg/kg), fenbendazole 10% (5 mg/kg), levamisole 10% (5 mg/kg), and moxidectin 1% (0.2 mg/kg). Anthelmintic efficacy was determined by the FEC reduction test (FECRT) with a second sampling 14 days post-treatment. The efficacy of albendazole and fenbendazole at farm 1 was above 95%,...

Resistance inducing agents on the biology and probing behaviour of the greenbug in wheat Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Rosane Rodrigues Costa; Moraes,Jair Campos; Prado,Ernesto; Dacosta,Ronelza Rodrigues.
The greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the main pestinsects of wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.). Resistance inducing agents as silicon (Si) and acibenzolar-s-methyl (ASM) can provide some protection against insects and diseases. The effect of Si and/or ASM on the development and probing behaviour of S. graminum in wheat plants was evaluated. Wheat plants (cultivar Embrapa 22) were treated with Si (silicic acid at the rate of 1%) and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) at the rate of 0.5%. The effects of these treatments on greenbugs were analyzed by development parameters, honeydew excretion and probing behavior monitored by Electrical Penetration Graphs (EPG). The development and honeydew experiments consisted of ten replications...

Resistência de cultivares de batata a Myzus persicae (Sulz.)(Hemiptera: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Salas,Fernando J S; Lopes,João R S; Fereres,Alberto.
Aphids are the most important vectors of viruses infecting potato (Solanum tuberosum). We focused on the response of the aphid vector Myzus persicae (Sulzer) to five commercial potatocultivars: Ágata, Jaette Bintje, Mondial, Monalisa and Santè, by traditional antibiosis and antixenosis tests and by the EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph) technique, as a step forward to the design of effective management practices. Our aim was to identify plant factors involved in resistance of these cultivars against M. persicae, both at the surface and in deeper plant tissues. Results from the antixenosis test confirmed a strong preference of M. persicae for the Mondial cultivar. The antibiosis study indicated a lower population development of the aphid in 'Monalisa' when...
